Dear Friends,
In response to recent news about the federal government’s resettlement of white South Africans, specifically Afrikaners, we want to share important context and reaffirm our organizational values and position.
While the admissions status of thousands of internationally recognized refugees remains in limbo—and recently arrived refugees continue to seek our support—JFCS East Bay will not be diverted by participating in the fulfillment of this Executive Order. Our decision is rooted in our organizational values, particularly the Jewish imperatives to both “welcome the stranger” combined with the imperative to “pursue justice.” Refugee resettlement must be based on clear evidence of persecution. This initiative undermines the integrity of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program as established by the Refugee Act passed by Congress in 1980.
We stand in solidarity with all refugees and asylum seekers, particularly those still waiting and facing dangerous conditions. We also stand with those pursuing justice through the courts, including the plaintiffs in Pacito v. Trump, a case challenging the unlawful suspension of the United States Refugee Admissions Program. We are hopeful that, as this case progresses, it will help restore a robust and fair refugee admissions process.
We look forward to rebuilding our capacity to resettle refugees, especially those who have waited years to reunite with family in the East Bay and to rebuild their lives in safety. When our country once again fully embraces its refugee commitments, JFCS East Bay will be ready to respond.
As always, we are grateful for your partnership and trust as we continue to support the life goals of recently arrived refugees and provide legal services to immigrants seeking safety and stability. Together, we are building a stronger East Bay.
