As we absorb the news of the violent attack on Jewish community members gathering to welcome in the light and joy of Hanukkah in Sydney, Australia, we are reminded that Hanukkah is about standing up for and standing with community. Throughout the East Bay, from Berkeley to Oakland to Walnut Creek and places in between, Jewish community members and allies are joining together this week to publicly celebrate the miracle of Hanukah, the Jewish festival of lights. We also mourn the lives lost, hold close those who were injured and stand in solidarity with the Jewish community in Australia and around the world.
“Our vision is a community where everyone can flourish with dignity,” said Robin Mencher, CEO of JFCS East Bay. “We remain committed to care, advocacy, and partnership in the face of antisemitism and all forms of hate.”
JFCS East Bay staff members are available to support the community through our services, including helping individuals and families deal with the emotional effects of antisemitic attacks; whether here or abroad. Reach out at (925) 927-2000 or Request Help.
May each night of Hanukkah increase the light in our community. May we honor bystanders who become upstanders and change agents, and may we continue working together to build an East Bay rooted in dignity, safety, and compassion for all.
