Program Feature: Chaverim Jewish Community Care

At JFCS East Bay, we believe in fostering connection and creating enriching opportunities for all members of our community. Our Chaverim program exemplifies this commitment by providing social and educational opportunities to Jewish neurodivergent adults in Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

Designed to serve individuals who often face social isolation, the Chaverim program offers a welcoming environment for participants ranging from 30 to 75 years old. The program’s monthly events are thoughtfully curated to enhance sociability, interpersonal connection, and confidence. Since the onset of COVID-19, Chaverim has adapted into a hybrid model, hosting primarily online gatherings with occasional in-person meetups.

These events are more than just a chance to socialize; they are structured to foster meaningful interactions and personal growth. Participants engage in activities that promote social skills, validate shared experiences, and encourage the adoption of healthier habits. The sense of community and understanding among members is palpable, as they connect with others who share similar challenges and triumphs.

Chaverim’s events are diverse and engaging, featuring a range of topics that stimulate both the mind and the heart. Our facilitator, in collaboration with group members, has developed a dynamic roster of activities conducted over Zoom. These include educational sessions on Judaism and Israel, explorations of various cultures, cooking and baking demonstrations, and discussions on self-care. Members also enjoy interactive activities like games and show-and-tell sessions, which provide a fun platform for personal expression and bonding.

An integral aspect of the program is the opportunity for members to present on subjects they are passionate about. These presentations have covered a wide array of topics, such as Star Trek, James Bond, Star Wars, personal travel experiences, and hometown histories. This peer-led component not only enriches the group’s knowledge but also empowers individuals to share their interests and stories with pride.

In addition to virtual meetings, Chaverim organizes in-person outings, allowing members to enjoy the outdoors and connect face-to-face. These gatherings in local parks provide a refreshing change of pace and further strengthen the bonds within the group.

Through Chaverim, JFCS East Bay continues to build a supportive, inclusive community where neurodivergent adults can thrive, make new friends, and engage in lifelong learning. We are proud to offer a program that not only combats isolation but also celebrates the unique strengths and interests of each participant.
