Urgent: New U.S. Immigration Policy Endangers Afghan Families

Afghan Families Are at Risk. Stand with Us to Demand Protection.

Since 2021, JFCS East Bay has supported more than 2,300 Afghan immigrants and refugees who arrived in the East Bay seeking safety. These families include women banned from education, children separated from their loved ones, and individuals who risked their lives to support U.S. efforts in Afghanistan.

A new federal policy shift now threatens these very people.

Many Afghans in our community arrived under humanitarian parole—a temporary legal status never meant to be permanent. Due to enormous backlogs, limited resources, and skyrocketing legal costs, thousands have been unable to secure a more stable immigration pathway, even though they are eligible. Without urgent legal relief, they face detention or deportation back to a regime that denies them basic human rights.

Deportation could mean returning to life-threatening danger.

This is not an abstract issue. It affects people we know—students in our schools, employees in our businesses, families in our neighborhoods.

What We’re Doing:

  • Offering legal services to help Afghans apply for asylum and other permanent statuses
  • Guiding families through confusing and ever-changing immigration processes
  • Updating our staff and volunteers with accurate, timely information so they can respond with care

What You Can Do:

  • Share this message with your networks
  • Stay informed and ready to speak out when it matters most – Contact your Senators and Members of Congress.

This moment calls for courage and compassion. Thank you for standing with Afghan families, with refugees and immigrants, and with JFCS East Bay as we continue the work of welcome and protection.
